in protest against israel don't come in to clash with that jewish identity. now, this has reverberating effects throughout the entire experience of jews in san francisco, whether we are talking about their involvement in social activities, talking about their experiences with anti-semitism or really and what i'm really interested in and it segues to a lot of the other work we do in the institute is how it impacts jewish identity. how on some level, what is going on is that there is some lack of clarity of what jew under identity really means and who we really are and the void is being filled in many cases by assumptions about jews. so, for example, a jew who is raised as -- in a family that is very much into social justice, that you are parents encourage them to engage in protests, they find all of a sudden that that identity that they believed they had is not accepted by everybody else and they are essentially told, well, no, that part of your jewish identity is not valid here. i personally think it has a lot to do with a lack of forward kind of think

with issue number one, israel. he has been criticized, chuck hagel, that is, for using the term jewish lobbyist. this is what he said, quote, the political reality is the jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up here. i have always argued some of the dumb things they do because i don't think it's in the interest of israel. i just don't think it's spamart for israel. some say chuck hagel owes an apology for that. after all, not all jews support what israel does. does hagel have to explain himself, david? >> well, i don't want to parse a brief phrase that a nominee has used. many people use unfortunate phrases and go on to be excellent nominees. the problem with chuck hagel is not a phrase. the problem with chuck hagel is a consistent attitude. the next secretary of defense will be -- will likely to have deal with two basic types of issues at the top of the inbox. the first is managing a defense build down, if the sequester goes into effect, a very dramatic defense build down. you need someone with excellent military management experience, which chuck hagen does not have. i think you

it is in the interest of israel. i just don't think it is smart for israel. some say chuck hagel owes an apology for that. after all, not all jews support what israel does. there could be an israeli lobby and that could be different from an jewish lobby. does hagel have to explain himself? >> well, i don't want to parse a every phrase a nominee has used. many people use unfortunate phrases and go on to be excellent nominees. the problem with chuck hagel is not a phrase. the problem with chuck hagel is a consistent attitude. the next secretary of defense will be -- will likely to have deal with two basic types of issues at the top of the inbox. the first is managing a defense build down, if the sequester goes into effect, a very dramatic defense build down. you need someone with excellent military management experience, which chuck hagel does not have. i think you were too kind to him in the opening presentation. the second challenge will be the challenge of iran. we are probably coming to the extreme decision point where iran in the four years ahead. and chuck hagel has shown himself again and a

addressed claims that he's anti- israel, among other things. california democrat barbara boxer also issued a statement of support. the backing of two prominent jewish senators is expected to help hagel ease concerns among other, pro-israel lawmakers. a major debt rating agency warned today the u.s. could lose its top credit status if there's a delay in raising the debt ceiling. the federal government is expected to exceed its borrowing limit by march, unless congress acts. if fitch does downgrade u.s. debt, it would join standard and poor's, which took that action in 2011 during the last debt ceiling debate. the u.s. house moved to pass a hurricane sandy relief bill this evening. $17 billion would go for immediate recovery in the affected northeastern states. another $33 billion is for long- term spending. some republicans argued that much of the money isn't for emergency relief at all. california's tom mcclintock called for stripping that funding out. >> according to the congressional budget office, more than 90% of this money won't even be spent this year. that's not emergency relief. $1
